Casting News – Marilyn & Laurence, along with Sybil

A new film about to go into production is one of interest. A biopic telling the story of the making of the film “The Prince And The Showgirl“.

The movie was an American production made in 1957 staring Marilyn Monroe & Laurence Olivier (who also directed), it also featured in a supporting role, veteran British stage actress, Sybil Thorndike.

Based on the memoir by Colin Clark, who was a PA on the film. Olivier became involved because he wanted to nurture a successful film career, Monroe wanted to be taken seriously, and working alongside Olivier gave her cred. According to the tome, Olivier loathed Monroe and her hangers on, which included her husband of the time, playwrite Arthur Miller, and her drama coach. The only one who seemed to understand Monroe was Sybil Thorndike.

Cast as Marilyn is Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain, Shutter Island). Playing Olivier is Kenneth Branagh (Henry V). In the role of Sybil Thorndike is Judi Dench. I like the casting of the two female roles, but as for Branagh as Olivier, I am not impressed. Branagh has always seen himself as a worthy predecessor to Sir Laurence, maybe as a Shakespearean director, but as an actor – forget it. Anyway we shall see.

The film is being directed by TV stalwart Simon Curtis (Cranford).
