While on my recent US holiday I didn’t go to the cinema at all. Most of the time the movies showing there are released at the same time as here in Australia. There were 2 films I tried to find the time to see, but so much other stuff got in the way. Both are potential Oscar bait films. Both were shown at the Sundance film fest. Sundance seems to be a guide for what’s hot to see. Take for example Animal Kingdom, already released here, and about to be released in the US very soon. It’s got the buzz!
The 2 films I regret not seeing are
1. THE WINTER’S BONE. Winner of the Sundance Grand Jury prize. In the tradition of Frozen River & Maria Full Of Grace. . It is my kind of flick. Super low budget. Takes you into another world (the Ozark mountains), one I am unaware of, and fascinated to learn about. Features a career making performance from Jennifer Lawrence. It is doing very well in it’s limited release. It is screening at the Melbourne film festival in on July 25 & 27
2. THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT. Directed by Lisa Cholodenko (High Art, Laurel Canyon). It stars Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo & Aussie actress Mia Wasikowska, who is very hot right now. What a pedigree. Unfortunately it was screening in only 3 cinemas and all sessions were sold out. It has received stellar reviews, and it appears that Annette Bening should pick her designer duds for the Oscars right now. Does anyone else want to sleep with MarkRuffalo? It opens here in September, or you can catch it at the Melbourne film festival on July 24 & 27
